Sunday Field Trips (8 am to 3 pm)

(Attendance limited to registered attendees)
A $15 fee for each field trip includes box lunch.

# 1 - Field Trip East - “The Gap, The Box and The Maze”

The itinerary for the Armijo Route East Field Trip includes a:

  • Visit to Pioneer Gap area and sections of the historic Mormon Honeymoon Wagon Trail and the trail corridors of the 1829 Old Spanish Trail Armijo Route and the 1776 Dominguez-Escalante expedition.
  • Visit to the historic Old Paria Town Site, the Spencer mining ruins, and the Box of the Paria River
  • Visit to the Maze petroglyphs in House Rock Valley. Also near a famous Dominguez-Escalante campsite.

# 2 - Field Trip West – “Camps, Springs, and Glyphs”

The Armijo Route West Field Trip itinerary includes:

  • Local area historic sites near Fredonia
  • A ranger led tour of Pipe Spring National Monument and Ridge Trail hike. Pipe Spring National Monument is rich with American Indian, early explorer and Mormon pioneer history. Ancestral Puebloans and Kaibab Paiute Indians lived at the site of the natural springs for at least 1,000 years. It is likely that New Mexican trader Antonio Armijo stopped at the springs in 1829.
  • A visit to prehistoric traversing glyphs and petroglyphs. It is theorized that the many traversing symbols across the Arizona Strip were used by the Ancient Pueblo peoples to mark ancient trails, water sources in the desert, and campsites.

#3 – Snake Gulch Hike – For experienced hikers only!

A strenuous hike into remote Snake Gulch (part of the Kanab Creek Wilderness Area) to visit world class pictograph panels. Experience hikers only. This is a strenuous long distance hike with a group size limit of 10.
